Mission Statement
The Coalition for Smart Growth is dedicated to working diligently through consistent citizen participation to protect the quality of life, natural areas, rural and urban communities and the local economy of Northern Beaufort County through a commitment to integrated regional planning, dissemination of information and advocacy for prudent infrastructure investment and open governmental decision making.
Principles of Smart Growth
- preserve open space, farmland, natural beauty, and critical environmental areas
- provide for a mix of land uses and a healthy economy
- take advantage of compact, environmentally sensitive building design
- create a range of housing opportunities and choices
- create walkable neighborhoods
- foster local communities with a strong sense of history, culture and place
- strengthen and direct development towards existing population centers
- provide for a variety of transportation choices
- make development decisions predictable open fair, and collaborative
- encourage community and stakeholder collaboration in development decisions

To us the term "smart growth" means the careful management of land uses to preserve and enhance our lowcountry community. The goals of smart growth here are to sustain our culture, our economy, and our unique natural resources; to expand the range of housing, employment and transportation available to us; to equitably distribute the costs and benefits of development and to preserve our community for future generation
